HPD arrests one suspect in counterfeit money case, asks for help in identifying second

HUNTSVILLE — The Huntsville Police Department announced Nov. 16 that they had arrested one man connected to a case of counterfeit bills, but they are still looking for another suspect.

According to Lt. Michael Johnson, public information officer for HPD, HPD charged 40-year-old Scott Wayne Crook for possession of a forged instrument and theft by deception, both in the first degree.

Johnson said a citizen’s anonymous tip led one HPD officer to stop Crook.

HPD had spread a video and photo several weeks ago that showed Crook at a Firehouse Subs location on Carl T. Jones Drive. Johnson said Crook was wanted in connection with the use of counterfeit $100 bills. He had presented one of these $100 bills during a purchase he made there last month and received change back.

“Several other businesses were victims as well,” Johnson said.

After Crook’s arrest, HPD discovered that he had six more of these counterfeit bills in his possession.

“We are still looking for the second suspect … who presented a similar bill at an area Five Points business bearing the same serial number,” Johnson added.

The serial number on the bill provided by police is MB 99096123 I.
