The Links sponsors Multicultural Extravaganza

MADISON – The Greater Huntsville Chapter of The Links, Incorporated will host its 21st annual Multicultural Extravaganza on April 13.

The event will open at 2 p.m. in the Ernest Knight Center on the campus of historic Alabama A&M University. “We will celebrate diversity through song, music, dance, food and artistic expressions,” Kimberly Ford said. Ford is Chapter President of the Greater Huntsville Chapter of the Links.

“The extravaganza is a family friendly event, and children are welcome. There is no charge for admission, and the public is invited to join this celebration,” Ford said.

The invited special guest is the Pan African Youth Leadership Delegation. This group includes 15 high school students from Rwanda, Nigeria and Zambia.

The Links, Incorporated is one of the oldest and largest volunteer service organizations of women committed to enriching, sustaining and ensuring the cultural and economic survival of African American and other persons of African ancestry.

The Greater Huntsville Chapter was chartered in 1997 and has focused on programs supporting and enriching the lives of all Alabama citizens.

Judge Lynn Sherrod is serving as Event Chair, and Cynthia McCollum is Publicity Chair for the Multicultural Extravaganza.

The Links, Incorporated was founded on November 9, 1946 by Margaret Roselle Hawkins and Sarah Strickland Scott, two young Philadelphia visionaries. They invited seven of their friends to join them in organizing a new type of inter-city club.

In 1945, Hawkins had conceived the idea of a group of clubs composed of friends along the eastern seaboard and had spent many hours with Scott in thinking, planning and discussing the possibilities of the new organization.

Today, The Links, Incorporated includes more than 15,000 professional women of color in 288 chapters located in 42 states, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of the Bahamas and the United Kingdom.
