Hulsey sworn in as newest member of school board

MADISON – The Madison City Board of Education welcomed its newest board member Thursday night.

Greg Hulsey was sworn in for a five-year term, replacing Connie Spears, who did not seek re-appointment after two-terms, spanning ten years.

Madison County Circuit Judge Claude Hundley administered the oath as Hulsey’s wife and two daughters, James Clemens and Liberty Middle students, stood by his side.

Hulsey is the CEO of Maynor & Mitchell Eye Center/Eye Surgery Center of North Alabama. He was previously the director of practice and analysis and improvement for Children’s of Alabama.

He served on the school district’s capital finance planning committee in August.

Hulsey was one of four finalist considered for their appointment last month by the Madison City Council.

Board President Ranae Bartlett led other board members in welcoming him.

In brief remarks near the close of the board meeting. Hulsey said he feels honored to be selected, is impressed by the quality of the school system and looks forward to serving.

“Over the past few weeks, I have had a chance to meet people and see the operations at the central office. I am so impressed by what is going on in our school system,” Hulsey said.

Hulsey’s parents were also present for the swearing-in ceremony. He added that his father, David Hulsey, is a former principal and school district superintendent. “He is who inspired me to want to serve in this capacity.”

Bartlett announced that Hulsey will also serve on the school district’s finance and policy committees as a representative of the school board.
