Madison mayor issues statement on tragic accident involving police officer

The Madison Mayor’s Office released the following statement late yesterday about Saturday’s tragic accident involving a Madison police office:

After the recent officer involved accident on Wall Triana and McCrary Road, The City of Madison expresses condolences to the family of Ms. Phyllis Pine.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Ms. Pine and send our regards to her grieving family. Our public servants can assure citizens that road safety remains a primary focus in the Madison community,” says Mayor Paul Finley.

The accident investigation is currently being lead by the Huntsville Police Department. Madison Police Chief, David Jernigan comments, “HPD has full support from our agency throughout this matter, and we will continue to cooperate on every level for a thorough investigation.”

The officer involved in the wreck is currently recovering at Huntsville Hospital from surgery related to the injuries sustained in the accident.

MADISON – A tragic accident Saturday involving a Madison police officer has claimed the life of an elderly woman.

Madison Police issued an alert over the weekend stating that one of its officers was involved in a two-car accident on the way to work. The wreck occurred on Wall Triana Highway and McCrary Road just north of Madison.

The collision happened just before 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

“Both our officer and the driver of the second vehicle were transported to Huntsville Hospital with injuries not considered to be life threatening. HPD is working the accident,” the alert on Twitter said.

Huntsville Police spokesman Lt. Michael Johnson said the passenger of the second was 92-year-old Phyllis Pine. She reportedly died Sunday afternoon from her injuries.

“The officer was traveling south and she was traveling north,” said Lt. Michael Johnson with the Huntsville Police Department.

Madison Police are expected to go through dash cam video from the officers car. Investigators are hoping that will help them figure out who is at fault in this accident.

Shortly after leaving the scene of the accident, an HEMSI ambulance was involved in a second wreck on Wall Triana while transporting a person to the hospital. HEMSI spokesperson Don Webster said there were no injuries in that accident.

The police officer involved in the first wreck was still in the hospital Sunday.

More information is expected throughout the week. Be sure to check www.themadisonrecord.com for updates to this story.
