July’s hot with options at Hogan Family YMCA
MADISON – Hogan Family YMCA will conduct classes during July that will train individuals for life saving and water proficiency.
“The Y offers something for everyone. Check out our newest program offerings, from fun and engaging activities for kids to classes that improve health and well-being,” YMCA Director of Communications Mary Anne Swanstrom said.
Lifeguard classes will be held in Madison on July 8-12 daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. On July 12, students will meet at Southeast YMCA at 1000 Weatherly Road SE in Huntsville for training in deep-water skills. Participants can register in person or online at ymcahuntsville.org.
“Whether you plan to use your certification to obtain employment as a lifeguard or want to protect your loved ones and those around you, you can become proficient through YMCA Lifeguard Instruction,” Swanstrom said.
“This is American Red Cross training for ages 15 and older to become a certified lifeguard. Classes include training in lifeguarding, first aid, CPR and oxygen administration. Attendance at all class sessions is mandatory, and both written tests and water skills tests must be passed to achieve certification,” Swanstrom said.
On July 13, an American Red Cross training class for CPR, first aid and automated external defibrillator or AED will meet from 9 a.m. to noon. “This course is blended learning. You will be required to complete an online portion that can take up to two hours to complete, along with a 3-hour, in-person skills test,” Swanstrom said.
This course teaches basic CPR techniques, AED usage, barrier device skills and emergency choking measures for an adult and pediatric victim. Final registration date is July 7. To register, visit ymcahuntsville.org.

On July 10, the “Nutrition for Diabetes” class will meet from 5 to 6 p.m. at Hogan Family YMCA. “Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States. If you or someone you know has diabetes, invite them to come with you to learn how to help control diabetes with diet and help avoid the dreaded highs and lows,” Swanstrom said.

Another series of sessions will offer swim lessons for parent with child. The child’s age can be six months to three years.
Parents can choose among several scheduled times for classes:
* Saturdays from July 6-27 — 11 to 11:30 a.m.
* Monday through Thursday, July 8-18 — 9 to 9:30 a.m.
* Monday through Thursday, July 8-18 — 4 to 4:30 p.m.
* Monday through Thursday, July 8-18 — 6 to 6:30 p.m.
Accompanied by a parent, the children will learn to be comfortable in the water and develop swim readiness skills through fun and confidence-building experiences. Simultaneously, parents will learn about water safety, drowning prevention and supervision.
The “Water Discovery (Stage A)” phase will introduce infants and toddlers to the aquatic environment. “Water Exploration (Stage B)” will focus on exploring body positions, blowing bubbles and fundamental safety/aquatics skills. A child who is not potty-trained must wear a swim diaper; parents can buy swim diapers for $1 at the YMCA Member Services Desk.
