Operation Christmas Cleanup helps clear holiday debris

MADISON, HUNTSVILLE – Most people look forward all year for the bright and shiny decorations of Christmas. As pleasing as that garland and gingerbread may be, the removal process is a melancholy chore that depresses many folks.

“Operation Christmas Cleanup” will help residents deal with the seasonal mess and debris on Jan. 4 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Volunteers at this community event will help with the collection of Christmas trees, cardboard and electronic recycling components.

In Madison, residents can take the trash to Madison City Schools Stadium at 211 Celtic Drive.

Huntsville residents can dispose of the holiday items by taking the material to Joe Davis Stadium at 3125 Leeman Ferry Road.

“Cleaning up after the holidays for the New Year … that chore is coming,” City of Huntsville spokesperson Denise Taylor said. Taylor works as Program Manager for the J.D. and Annie S. Hays Nature Preserve and the Goldsmith-Schiffman Wildlife Sanctuary in Huntsville.

“Please help us spread the word about this post-holiday and New Year opportunity for cleanup recycling on Jan. 4,” Taylor said.

The Solid Waste Disposal Authority or SWDA and the Recycling Alliance of North Alabama or RANA collaborated for this effort, along with Operation Green Team, City of Huntsville, City of Madison and Madison County.

In case of inclement weather, organizers have scheduled an alternative date for Jan. 11, 2020 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

For more information on the event, call 256-801-CARTS or visit recycling-alliance.com. Then, click “News,” and click the box for “Operation Christmas Cleanup.” Individuals also can visit huntsvilleal.gov, Facebook/Operation Green Team and Twitter HsvGreenTeam.
