MADISON – Danny J. Marr enlisted in the U.S. Army and reported to basic training at Fort Dix, N.J.

He completed advanced training at Military Intelligence School at Fort Huachuca, Ariz. and served with JFK Center for Military Assistance at Fort Bragg, N.C. In 1976, he married his college sweetheart, Virginia.

In 1978, Marr received a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant from Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Ga. and completed airborne training. Following Quartermaster (QM) Officer Basic Course at Fort Lee, he deployed to Germany and was assigned to the 503rd Supply & Transport Battalion, 3rd Armored Division.

He returned to Fort Lee for QM Officer Advanced Course and a Parachute Rigger course. He then had an R&D assignment in the Aero-Mechanical Engineering Laboratory at Natick R&D Center in Massachusetts and as Product Manager for a Computer-Aided Design and Engineering System.

The U.S. Army selected him to assemble, activate and command a new Supply & Transport Troop, CSS, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment in Germany. “Surrounded by great soldiers, this was my most rewarding assignment,” Marr said.

“Orders returned me stateside to attend various professional training courses and to complete a master’s degree in logistics management from Florida Institute of Technology,” Marr said.

He returned overseas as a Supply Policy Officer and worked in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff Logistics or ODCSLOG in Heidelberg, Germany. He supported U.S. Army Europe’s downsizing planning and Gulf War support operations.

In the United States, Marr worked on procurements in Special Projects Support Activity to support Special Operation Forces. His final assignment before retirement was as a Transportation Officer in ODCSLOG, where he drafted the transportation movement document in preparation for troop deployments to Bosnia.

After military service, he worked briefly for a Defense Contractor in north Virginia and managed a Navy office database. He then accepted a position with Battelle and retired in 2010 as a senior research scientist. He joined Army Materiel Command at Redstone Arsenal, focused on Business Process Management Development, until his civilian retirement in 2015.

Marr completed a bachelor’s degree in English in 1975. He is an Honor Guard member in Madison American Legion, Post 229.
