Turnovers doom Austin as Sparkman says “no” to their comeback momentum

Sparkman added to Austin’s woes this season with a 38-21 win on the road. The Black Bears chased Sparkman all over the field at Austin Stadium. They especially chased Sparkman’s Devon Agee when he returned the opening kickoff to give the Senators a quick 7-0 lead.

The Senators scored again with a short run into the end zone to open the second quarter. Then, Luke Schomburg scored with a a 15 yard rushing touchdown, followed by a Jack Rice PAT to put Sparkman up 21-0 at halftime.

Austin scored on its first possession of the second half to make it 21-7. Sparkman answered with a big play three plays later on a 72-yard touchdown pass from Schomburg to Matthew Rozier, making it 28-7. Austin’s Tra Stover then ran the ensuing kickoff back for a touchdown to cut the lead to 28-14. Four plays later, Austin scored again with a 17-yard touchdown to make it 28-21 with 5:35 left to play in the third quarter.

After a short Sparkman punt, Austin had the ball at the Senators’ 38 with a chance to possibly tie the game. Five plays later, the comeback momentum disappeared when Sparkman’s Justin Caudle returned an interception 75 yards for a touchdown.

Sparkman (3-2, 3-0) added a field goal in the fourth quarter to produce the final margin of 38-21.

The win was big for Sparkman, coached by Laron White. “We played well in the first half, but should have had a couple of more touchdowns,” White said. “That nearly came back to bite us in the second half.”

Sparkman will host Class 7A Region 4 rival Bob Jones on Friday at 7 p.m. The Patriots are coming off a big Region win against Florence on Friday.
