    Indoor Track State Track Meet Highlights Local Student-Athletes; John English Lone Gold Medal Winner

    BIRMINGHAM- Superb performances by the four local schools in the Madison area were presented at the AHSAA Indoor Track State Meet with five medals brought home from the 52nd annual event held at Birmingham’s CrossPlex.

     

    Of the five podium appearances, the lone gold medal was won by John English of Madison Academy. The 6-foot-2, 230-pound senior, who was named All-Region for the Mustang’s football team as tight end and defensive lineman, captured the top spot on the podium in the Class 4A-5A shot put with a throw of 48-feet, .75-inches.

     

    Additional awards came in Class 7A as silver medals went to Jordan Morrison of Bob Jones with a 21-09.50 mark in the long jump and Jaylen Drake of James Clemens who took the runner-up spot in the shot put with a toss of 51-10.50.

     

    Bronze medals were draped around the necks of Dylan Dryer of from James Clemens who took third place in the 800-meter with a time of 1-minute, 55.58-seconds and to Sparkman’s 4×200 girls relay team with a 1:45.57 finish time. The relay squad consisted of Amanda Davis, Janae Hilliard, Nevaeh Neerhof and Nicola Peters.

     

    The final team standings in Class 7A included boys- 1.Hoover 108, 5. James Clemens 32.50, 9. Bob Jones 19, 18. Sparkman 2; girls- 1. Hoover 119, 7. James Clemens 28, 10. Bob Jones 17, 16. Sparkman 9.

     

    The top eight finishers in each event scored team points and were named All-State. Leading those tabbed All-State were eighth grade sensation Ella Carter of James Clemens and sophomore track performer Dylan Dryer also of James Clemens, each of whom grabbed three All-State slots.

     

    The final tally of All-State finishes included: boys Class 4A-5A, shot put- 1. John English, Madison Academy 48-00.75, triple jump- 4. Lucas Hazelrig, Madison Academy 40-07.50; boys Class 7A, long jump- 2. Jordan Morrison, Bob Jones, 21-09.50, shot put- Jaylen Drake, James Clemens, 51-10.50, 7. Bobby Gray, Sparkman, 43-07.50, high jump- 6. Cosey Scarebrook, Bob Jones, 6-00, 60-meter, 4. Chad Coulter, James Clemens, 6.99, 800-meter- 3. Dylan Dryer, James Clemens, 1:55.58, 3200-meter- 6. Ryan Bender, Bob Jones, 9:50.64, 60-meter hurdles- 6. Benjamin Thomason, James Clemens, 8.65, 4×200- 4. Bob Jones, 1:32.48 (Jordan Urrutia, K.J. Fields, C.J. Bush, Jordan Morrison), 7. James Clemens, 1:32.88 (Kameron Barnett, Johnathan Campbell, Chad Coulter, David Ross), 4×400- 5. James Clemens, 3:30.81 (Isaac Pollard, Benjamin Thomason, Brexton Hathaway, Dylan Dryer), 4×800- 5. James Clemens, 8:23.27 (Isaul Rubio Montano, Brexton Hathaway, John Luke Stovall, Dylan Dryer); girls Class 7A, 60-meter- 6. Jane Hilliard, Sparkman 7.90, 400-meter- 6. Alivia Urrutia, 58.73, 800-meter- 7. Ella Carter, James Clemens, 2:27.15, 60-meter hurdles- 6. Reynna Mayers, James Clemens, 9.90, 4×200- 3.
