Madison, Triana library can add zest to cure the January blahs

MADISON, TRIANA – January’s dreary weather and few diversions result in January blahs. Luckily, Madison and Triana public libraries can alleviate those annoying blahs.

Madison Public Library has a full slate of diverse options:

• Art and Soul –This painting group for teenagers promotes creative expression and relaxation. No registration. Teens, bring your own supplies if possible. Jan. 8 from 4 to 5 p.m.

• Hobbit Hole Magnets – Celebrating J.R.R. Tolkien’s 133rd birthday, adults will create a magnet inspired by a hobbit hole. Materials provided. To register, visit calendly.com/madisonstudio/ adult-craft-hobbit. Jan. 9 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. For questions, email Ms. Nora at nbahr@hmcpl.org.

• MAD Movie-A-Thon-O-Rama “Horse Feathers” (1932). Hilarious sports spoof with the Marx Brothers. Professor Wagstaff (Groucho), new president of Huxley College, hires goofy Baravellii (Chico) and Pinky (Harpo) to guarantee a winning football team. Frank Wagstaff (Zeppo) is a lazy student. Includes adult situations. Jan. 9 from 6 to 7:45 p.m.

• Breastfeeding Support Group – Mothers of nine-month-olds and older will interact with Madison Hospital staff. Jan. 10 from 10 to 11 a.m.

• Huntsville Symphony Orchestra — A Huntsville Symphony Orchestra musician will perform a 45-minute concert. Jan. 10 from 1:30 to 2:15 p.m. For questions, email creagle@hmcpl.org.

• Fever Dream Cinema – “Labyrinth” (1986). Sixteen-year-old Sarah must rescue her baby brother from the Goblin King. Muppets creator Jim Henson wrote/directed. Stars David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly. Jan. 16 from 6 to 9 p.m.

• Magic Treehouse – Civil War – Time travel to Civil War era with Jack and Annie to build tents, make a drum and study Clara Barton and Abraham Lincoln. Jan. 23 from 4 to 5 p.m.

• MAD Movie-A-Thon-O-Rama – “Lifeboat” (1944) is Alfred Hitchcock’s thriller with Huntsville native Tallulah Bankhead. After torpedoes sink a merchant ship during World War II, survivors share a lifeboat. Adult themes. Jan. 30 from 6 to 7:45 p.m.

Triana’s library staff has several planned events:

• “Crafting Book Dragons” Book Club – Join other adults for general discussion about a book, plus a book-themed craft. Meets monthly on second Thursdays. January’s theme: ‘favorite book in 2024,’ ‘new book in 2025.’ Jan. 9 from 4:30 to 6 p.m.

• Paint Night – Adults and older teenagers will paint after a YouTube video. To register, call 256-772-9943, or email triana@hmcpl.org with name, email and phone number. Supplies provided. Jan. 10. Opens 5:45 p.m.; painting from 6 to 8 p.m.

• Homeschool Art(ist) – On Mondays, home-schoolers explore an artist to duplicate style/techniques. Jan. 13 for Romero Brito / Pop Art from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.

• Family Art – All ages. Drop in Tuesdays for a creative time. Jan. 21 from 2 to 5 p.m.
