TARCOG brightens Valentine’s Day for area senior citizens

MADISON COUNTY – In response to a special program’s benefits, Top of Alabama Regional Council of Governments or TARCOG delivered gifts on Valentine’s Day to 2,000 senior citizens throughout the agency’s region.

TARCOG’s Area Agency on Aging component collaborated with the Wish of a Lifetime initiative with the American Association of Retired Persons or AARP. TARCOG personnel then delivered 2,000 roses and greeting cards, plus pairs of 500 socks, as a heartwarming treat for constituents on Valentine’s Day.

On Feb. 13, the prep work began at Alabama A&M University’s Agribition Center, 4925 Moores Mill Road in Huntsville. TARCOG’S Cupid Crew organized the flowers and socks for delivery.

“The goal of the Wish of a Lifetime’s campaign for TARCOG’s Cupid Crew was to spread love and joy to seniors across the nation, ensuring they feel connected and valued,” according to TARCOG’s press release.

Then on Valentine’s Day on Feb. 14, TARCOG’s Cupid Crew delivered roses to 2,000 seniors in nursing homes, adult day centers, senior centers and the agency’s Medicaid Waiver clients in DeKalb, Jackson, Limestone, Madison and Marshall counties.

TARCOG’s staff takes pride in serving as one of Bombas Giving Partners throughout the United States. The company donates essential clothing to Giving Partners for distribution ranging from homeless shelters to community organizations in all 50 states. TARCOG teamed up with several youth and community service agencies to create the Valentine’s Day cards and messages for recipients. The cards will serve as an additional gesture to help strengthen intergenerational connections.

“TARCOG is honored to have participated in both programs to spark hope and joy in the hearts of older adults,” Sheila Dessau-Ivey said. She serves as Director of Aging Programs for TARCOG.

TARCOG is designated as the region’s Area Agency on Aging. The TARCOG staff plans and provides services to individuals who are 60 years old and older. Its Economic Development and Planning team provides community and regional planning, economic development and job creation, along with funding services for projects in local governments.

TARCOG is building new headquarters on Corporate Drive in Huntsville’s MidCity District. For more information, call 256-830-0818, or visit tarcog.us.
