Town Madison I-565 interchange opens after two years of construction

MADISON – The westbound I-565 exit ramps are now open in Town Madison. The city of Madison in conjunction with ALDOT and state representatives cut the ribbon on the almost $37 million project on Friday.

The ribbon cutting completes the interchange work in the area as the eastbound interchange at Town Madison opened in 2021. Construction on the westbound interchange started in November 2022 and was initially projected to finish in 2024 but experienced weather delays that pushed opening to 2025. The project was funded entirely by the City of Madison and partially supported by sales tax revenue after the Publix in Clift Farm was annexed into the City of Madison.

The new interchanges will give Town Madison full and direct access to I-565. Previously, westbound drivers had to take Madison Boulevard 3 miles to the Wall Triana Boulevard interchange to access the interstate.

“That is really opening more access into Town Madison that’ll help bring more revenue, more quality of life opportunities to our citizens and in turn, helping us improve access here for the shop owners as well as the businesses and things that are here,” said City Council President John Seifert.

The new ramps will be especially beneficial to Toyota Field and the Rocket City Trash Pandas minor league baseball team.

“This is something that is critical to the success of Toyota Field,” commented Mayor Paul Finley. “You can’t have better partners than the Trash Pandas.”

Finley said he also expects the new interchanges to ease rush hour traffic congestion related to Redstone Arsenal.

“When Space Command comes, we certainly better have more opportunity to get people on and off the arsenal. This helps us get to Gate 7 and get out of Gate 7 to where the folks need to go. This is a huge win for our city, for our community,” said Finley.
