Central Office values Becky Tucker as ‘Staff Member of the Year’
MADISON – Becky Turner doesn’t get hung up on labels. No matter her job title, Tucker feels called to be a servant leader. Her colleagues at Central Office have selected Tucker as “Staff Member of the Year.”
“My best friend, a retired Air Force Major holds a doctorate in nursing. She said in the Air Force, ‘When you take care of the people, they will take care of the mission.’ That really stuck with me,” Tucker said.
In Tucker’s transition from clinic nurse to nursing supervisor, her focus shifted from the one who “takes care of students” to the one who “takes care of the people who take care of the students.” “My hope is that by focusing on people first, we build a community and culture where everyone thrives,” Tucker said.
Tucker works as System Supervising Nurse for Madison City Schools. I graduated from Troy University with a bachelor’s degree in nursing in 2000. “I was the first Nationally Board Certified School Nurse (NCSN) for MCS. I obtained that credential in 2020 (the day after we shut down for COVID-19) and have since met the requirements to re-certify for another five years,” Tucker said.
“We’ve added three more NCSNs in MCS. At the end of the last school year, there were only 27 in Alabama,” Tucker said.
Previously, Tucker worked for Athens Internal Medicine and Limestone County Schools as a substitute nurse. Starting in 2016, Tucker served at Madison Elementary School as a clinic nurse. She then worked on all MCS campuses as a substitute and accepted the System Supervising Nurse role in 2023.
“School nursing is very autonomous, so it’s crucial for us to know our scope of practice, state and local guidelines and to operate within those,” Tucker said. “Rules provide structure, guidance and protection.”
“Our ultimate responsibility is to minimize any health-related barriers to learning and to promote a positive environment where students can maximize their physical growth and academic potential,” she said.
Tucker worked with Jamie Golliver, MCS Security and Emergency Management Coordinator, to streamline Emergency Response efforts and safety measures as a district. “We hosted ‘Stop the Bleed’ training for all nurses, purchased emergency backpacks and supplies with donations from Madison Optimist Club and have ordered 28 more automated external defibrillators, AED trainers and manikins.”
Her hometown is Dothan. She and Micah Tucker will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary in Dec. Micah works as Senior Software Engineer and Section Manager at Leidos.
The Tuckers’ children are Luke, a senior at the University of North Alabama; Seth, sophomore at Troy University; and Ally Claire, senior at East Limestone High School.
“I love to make memories with my family by attending church, chaperoning youth group events, going to concerts and relaxing at the beach,” Becky said. “I love to cook for anyone who loves to eat, and I’m a total librophile (lover of digital books). Actually, I’m pretty good at playing ping-pong.”
