Scares await at Madison Public Library’s ‘MAD Movie-A-Thon-ORama:

MADISON – January’s seasonal shudders will heighten with the “MAD Movie- A-Thon-O-Rama: Winter Chills Triple Feature” at Madison Public Library.

The three movies are rated R and intended for adult viewing (age 18 and older).

Chills and thrills of the Winter Chills Triple Feature will start on Jan. 8 with “Terror Train” (1980) from 6 to 7:45 p.m. Its tagline: “The boys and girls of Sigma Phi. Some will live. Some will die.”

Three years ago, Sigma Phi fraternity played a New Year’s Eve prank . . . gone wrong. Now, the fraternity is hosting a New Year’s Eve masquerade ball on a chartered train. However, one passenger has a deadly New Year’s resolution.

Starring in “Terror Train” are the ‘Queen of Scream,’ Jamie Lee Curtis of “Halloween” fame; Hart Bochner (“Die Hard”), Ben Johnson (“The Wild Bunch”), Vanity, protege of Prince (“The Last Dragon”) and master illusionist David Copperfield, according to go.hmcpl. org/MadMovie.

MAD Movie-A-Thon-O-Rama continues with John Carpenter’s “The Thing” (1982) on Jan. 22 at 6:30 p.m. Tagline: “Man Is the Warmest Place to Hide.”

Set in Antarctica, Research Outpost 31 discovers a UFO buried in the ice and then experiences a terror from another world. A shape-shifting alien infiltrates the camp.

The creature could inhabit anyone… everyone. This adaptation of John W. Campbell’s novella “Who Goes There?” is one of the greatest science-fiction/horror films from the 1980s.

“The Thing” stars Kurt Russell (“Escape From New York”), Keith David (“They Live”), Wilford Brimley (“Cocoon”) and outstanding special effects of Rob Bottin (“The Fog,” “The Howling”). The original film from the 1950s also resonated with audiences and developed a sense of claustrophobic doom.

The triple feature will wrap up on Jan. 29 at 6 p.m. with “The Terminator” (1984).

“The Terminator,” one of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s most popular movies, started a successful film series. Tagline: “The thing that won’t die, in the nightmare that won’t end.”

In 1984, a cyborg travels from the future to terminate the mother of the man who will one day lead mankind against the machines. Some reviewers say “The Terminator” is one of the greatest B-movies ever made.

This non-stop action/sci-fi thrill ride does not let up once it starts. The movie also stars Linda Hamilton (“Tag: The Assassination Game”) and Michael Biehn (“Aliens”). James Cameron directed the film . . . his follow-up to the Grade-B romp, “Piranha II: The Spawning.”

Madison Public Library’s address is 142 Plaza Blvd. For more information, visit go.hmcpl.org/MadMovie.
