Lady Mustangs advance with a 3-1 win in first-round of playoffs

MADISON – The National Weather Service predicted a 100 percent chance of rain, strong winds and possible tornadoes on Tuesday.

Maggie Boyd and her Madison Academy girls soccer teammates were 100 percent predicting success in the Class 1A-3A state tournament.

Boyd scored off a penalty kick in the first half, struck back-of-the-net gold again in the second, and the Lady Mustangs advanced with a 3-1 win over Collinsville in a first-round playoff game.

“The girls played together as one unit for all 80 minutes today,’’ Madison Academy head coach Kelley Murphy said. “I was really proud of their work rate, and even after giving up a goal, I loved seeing their response to get one back.’’

Payson Thomas also scored a goal off a throw-in, spinning around defenders at the front of the goal to finish it near post for her 27th goal.

“Payson is a very talented freshman,’’ Walker said. “She has a relentless work ethic. Our defense was anchored by our sophomore captain Emma Olsen.’’

Madison Academy will play Donoho at a time and place to be announced. The next round of games can be played between Apr. 30-May 2.

Madison Academy defeated Geraldine 1-0 in a 1A-3A boys game.
