Optimist Club plays in basketball event
The Optimist Club of Madison men's basketball league has been invited to play in a special, one-night championship event in Huntsville on Tuesday, April 15.
The SportsMED Night of Champions will be held at the Berachah Gymnasium on Sparkman Drive. Madison league division championship teams will face similar championship teams from the city of Huntsville's men's basketball league in the first ever meeting of the two leagues.
Old Skool will represent the A Division, while Asbury will represent the B Division.
"These leagues have never faced one another and its going to be great to see how each league represents itself against some great competition from another league," said Herschel Jordan, director of the Madison league and coach of the participating teams.
The B Division game will tip off at 6:30 p.m., while the A Division game will get under way at 8 p.m. SportsMED is providing T-shirts for each player and team trophies for each division champion. Pizza and refreshments will be provided.
A special local celebrity news media 3-point shooting contest will be held between games. The contest will feature numerous members of the local media from television, radio and print. Admission to the general public is free.
Nominations sought for father of the year
Nominations for Madison County's First Father of the Year are being sought by The Volunteer Center of Madison County.
The father of the year for 2003 will be honored on June 21 at a gala event in Huntsville. Nominations will be accepted through April 21. Forms and more information are available by calling the center at 539-7797 and from the Web site at www.volunteerhsv.org. Spouses, children, friends, and co-workers make the nominations. Nominees must work or reside within Madison County and be reviewed for the qualifications that make individuals outstanding fathers.
