Sparkman, Bob Jones reach state tourney

Rivals could match up again in third round at Lagoon Park

Sparkman and Bob Jones secured spots in the state softball tournament after finishing first and second respectively in the North Regional Softball Tournament at the Metro Kiwanis Sportsplex in Huntsville.
Sparkman, the defending Class 6A state champion, beat Bob Jones twice to win the region championship.
Sparkman beat Bob Jones 10-1 and 4-3 to win the championship and avenge an earlier 6-0 loss to Bob Jones that sent the Lady Senators to the loser’s bracket.
Sparkman opened the state tournament at Lagoon Park in Montgomery today at noon, while Bob Jones will face Dothan at the same time.
Wins would send the teams to second-round matchups at 7 p.m.
Sparkman and Bob Jones could meet again in the winner’s bracket of the tournament Saturday at 10:30 a.m. if both win their opening two games.
Jessica Hill and Keaton Johnson drove in two runs each for the Lady Senators in the 10-1 victory over Bob Jones.
Hill finished with a team-high three hits, while Johnson added two hits for the Lady Senators.
Meg Willis earned the win for Sparkman.
Katie Brinkman scored in the seventh inning to send Sparkman to a 4-3 win over Bob Jones.
The Lady Senators advanced to the championship with a 9-4 victory over Clay-Chalkville.
Sparkman scored eight runs in the fifth inning to beat Clay-Chalkville in a loser’s bracket game in the tournament.
Sarah Suggs drove in the go-ahead run for the Lady Senators.
Clay-Chalkville committed three errors during the fifth inning.
Bob Jones shut down Sparkman 6-0 to stay unbeaten in the regional tournament.
Bob Jones opened the tournament with a 4-0 win over Hazel Green and added a 13-0 victory over Hewitt-Trussville after scoring runs in every inning.
The Lady Patriots pounded out 14 hits to quickly dispatch Hewitt-Trussville.
Sparkman also opened with a pair of shutouts in the regional tournament, beating Grissom 14-0 and Pell City 17-0.
