Man in custody following standoff

Police

Officers prepare their equipment after a man barricaded himself in an apartment.

Dozens of Huntsville Police and Madison County sheriffs and officers were on the scene at an apartment complex on Lawson Ridge Drive after a male barricaded himself inside an apartment.

The man was taken into custody without incident after a two-hour long standoff at Weston Ranch Apartment Homes.

Officers received a call shortly before 1 p.m. about a man walking around the apartment complex, brandishing a shotgun. An off-duty officer responded to the call and made contact with the subject. The subject then proceeded to point the gun at the officer and retreated inside one of the apartment units, according to officer Jerry King.

“After negotiations, the subject surrendered and now being transported to the Huntsville E.R. for mental evaluations,” he said.

Madison Police dispatched every available officer until Huntsville officers could arrive on the scene. Eventually, nearly 30 Huntsville Police, Madison County Sheriff’s, Madison Police and other state and local agencies responded to the scene.

Police, armed with rifles, closed all entrances to the Weston Ranch Apartment Homes, even turning away a school bus.

The bus driver was instructed to return the kids to school, and the parents were informed to pick their children up at the school.
