Madison joins Japanese relief effort

Madison is doing its part in the effort to assist victims of the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan March 11, killing and injuring thousands.

LaTisha King, executive assistant to Madison City Schools Superintendent Dr. Dee Fowler, organized the HOPE from Madison campaign.

Madison City Schools employees who donate at least $5, and students who donate $3 or more, will receive a red HOPE (helping others prevail after emergencies) bracelet.

Elementary students who donate less than $3 will receive a One Cause 1 Color 1 Day sticker.  All employees and students are encouraged to wear their bracelets and stickers on April 29 as part of a “Day of HOPE in Madison.”

“After witnessing the devastation left behind by the earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan and the pacific coast, our hearts were compelled to share our resources to assist the area,” King said. “With Dr. Fowler’s permission, we started the campaign. Proceeds from the campaign will go to the American Red Cross, who will in turn use these resources to bring HOPE in what seems like a hopeless situation.”

Bracelets can be purchased at all Madison City Schools and at Central Office.

The American Red Cross will pick up the donations on the Monday after the campaign ends.

Checks should be made payable to the American Red Cross.

Donations will be accepted until April 28.

“If everybody gives a little, it becomes a lot,” King said. “We’re encouraging all Madison residents to come together to support the campaign.”
