The time is here for Family of the Year

The Trulock family was chosen as Madison's Family of the Year.

The Trulock family was proclaimed Madison’s Family of the Year at the City Council meeting Monday, June 13.

Members of the family include Troy, his wife Dana, their daughter Whitney and son Matt.

“I really was so shocked,” Dana said, regarding how she felt when she heard her family’s name called. “There are such great families here. It’s just amazing. We’re just a regular family, and to be recognized is an honor.”

They are founding members of the Hogan Family YMCA.

The Trulocks are members of Asbury United Methodist Church. Whitney and Matt have been involved in a lot of church activities, such as the Back to School Retreat.

Whitney is part of the chemistry club, Spanish club and was captain of the Bob Jones High School girls’ soccer team.

Matt is in the Spanish club, was captain of the Liberty Middle boys’ soccer team and played wide receiver and place-kicker for Bob Jones High School.

The Trulocks are greatly involved in sports, as Troy and Dana have coached numerous soccer and basketball teams.

They are also active in PTA and Booster Clubs.

Their family motto is to try to nurture each other through shared interests. They support each other through good times, as well as bad ones.

They still don’t know who nominated them. Dana expressed her gratitude to whoever nominated them.

“That wasn’t necessary for us to be nominated,” Whitney said. “Someone did it out of the goodness of their heart.”

John Butterfield, board member, explained families are nominated by their peers.

The families were nominated through the city’s website at the beginning of the year. Nominated families were given questionnaires allowing them to explain their activities throughout the past year.

The winner was supposed to be announced in May, but the announcement was rescheduled after tornados swept through the area in April.
