Bob Jones Basketball teams roll past Buckhorn

 BY LINDSAY VAUGHT

Bob Jones bolstered its ranking as the states top ranked boys basketball team Saturday night with a 54-38 win over Buckhorn.

The Patriots won their second game without leading rebounder and second leading scorer Reggie Ragland, who arrived in time from Montgomery where he played in the Alabama-Mississippi High School All Star game to watch the fourth quarter.

Jeffrey Moss picked up the scoring with a game high 19 as the Patriots never trailed. At the end of the first quarter, Bob Jones led 12-6 but Buckhorn closed to 21-19 as Justin Ward knocked down two three-pointers in the second quarter. It was a 23-19 game at halftime.

Moss got hot in the third quarter scoring 9 points in the quarter to give Bob Jones a 41-30 lead after three. Travon Landry ran the team at point guard and scored 11 points. Brandon Harris got extra playing time in Ragland’s absence and scored six.

Moss stayed hot in the fourth quarter as he had a crowd-pleasing breakaway dunk and followed that with a three-point play. Bob Jones starters played until deep in the fourth quarter and came out with less than a minute left.

Bob Jones is now 7-0 and will play at 5A Johnson on Tuesday night.

An area game at Austin looms next Friday night and Coach Danny Petty knows it will be a tough place to play.

“That’s a big game its going to be a packed house over there,” Petty said of the Patriots first area game of the season. “It’s the most important games. These others you want to win but we got to win these area games to host the area tournament here. That is our goal this year like past years.”

“You got to prepare a little more and be ready to play because these will be physical games,” Petty added.

Girls action: Bob Jones 49 Buckhorn 18

The Lady Patriots tuned up for a Monday night visit by Hoover with a dominating performance over Buckhorn. The final score was 49-18.

Bob Jones led 16-4 at the half and cruised to 29-11 third quarter lead as the starters played into the fourth quarter. Jasmine Jones had 14 to lead all scorers, Tierra Jones and China Leary each had 8 points.

Of concern to head Coach Tim Miller was the injury to the team’s second leading scorer DeAisia Campbell. She was carried from the gym and transported to Huntsville Hospital with a broken lower left leg. The coach and most of the team went to the hospital immediately after the game.
