Talent gets spotlight at Horizon

Singers, dancers and even a pogo stick champ performed at Horizon Elementary School’s talent show.

“The Horizon talent show has evolved into a much anticipated event every year,” school nurse Lisa Harmon said. Harmon serves as teacher representative to the Student Government Association, and Horizon PTA officers asked her to organize the show.

“As soon as one show has ended, the talk about the next show starts between the students,” Harmon said. “The self-satisfaction that the students gain is the ultimate goal. To see the joy in those faces as they bow and walk off the stage is priceless.”

Horizon alumni often appear in the talent show at Discovery Middle School.

Horizon’s show is open to all fifth- and sixth-graders students willing to attend practices and performances. “No one is omitted from the program,” Harmon said. “My belief is that if they are willing to perform before their peers, they will be given that chance.”

Peer support among the Horizon students amazes Harmon. The show required six emcees and two backstage helpers with 27 performers. This year’s show presented singing, dancing, instrumental music and even a student on a pogo stick.

“All performers are required to audition, but all are allowed to perform,” Harmon said. Auditions establish a line-up for a smooth performance.

“All the performers are huge winners,” she said. Students do not receive prizes because of the show format. “It’s not a competition. As these children leave Horizon, they are faced with tremendous competition in every aspect from academics to sports.”

Harmon believes this elementary school event is “a confidence-building platform. Hopefully, their spotlight on the Horizon stage will give them that moment that they will remember fondly for a lifetime.”

“The talent show was a great night,” Horizon PTA president Lauren Plott said. “The kids did a fantastic job. We have some very talented kids.”

Other PTA officers are vice president Karen Purser, treasurer DeAnne Newby; and chairpersons Kathryn Witek, membership; Rhonda Jackson, correspondence; Nanette Sparrow, communications; Alisa Henri, room moms; and Deborah Edwards, procurement.
