Dessert Night Out offers sweet treats, music and comedy for a cause

Dessert Night Out promises an evening of fun, entertainment and fabulous treats — but with a purpose.

Dessert Night Out will be held March 2 and 3 at 6:30 p.m. in the Five Points Youth Building on the Asbury United Methodist Church campus.

The event raises funds for the annual summer tour of the Asbury CHRIST (Christ Has Risen In Singing Teens) Choir. “Donations will be accepted to defer the cost of each child going on the trip,” conductor Susan Hatcher said.

Practically any cake, pie, pudding, cookie and cobbler imaginable will be served, along with low-fat and no-sugar recipes. Choir families prepare desserts and decorate Five Points.

While tasting desserts, guests will enjoy a full roster of entertainment, including The Silent Monks performing “Hallelujah Chorus,” brass quintet, “I Love Lucy” skit, senior girls and senior class songs and Fitness Art Center students in traditional Irish dancing.

“Pianists Steven Schneider and Terry Jackson will join with Jackson Love, who is 14, and Bryan Walker for a four-handed piano piece,” Hatcher said.

Entertainment will continue with comedy acts, vocal duets and trios, Asbury Puppets, Asbury women and men’s ensembles and the CHRIST Choir Ensemble’s rendition of “Surfing USA.”

The first Dessert Night Out was held in 1994. The event has been so successful because “it’s a fun night with a purpose,” Hatcher said. “We have the entertainment side, and it’s easy to come and enjoy it. But there’s a purpose why we’re there — to raise money for Christ.”

For its 2012 tour, the CHRIST Choir will travel to Tampa. They’ll first stop in Atlanta for mission work, coordinated by the Worldwind Missions organization, with refuges living in the city’s suburbs. Returning home, they will stop in St. Joe, Fla., south of Panama City, for more mission work.

CHRIST Choir teenagers are in grades 10-12 and sing at both traditional and contemporary worship services. Previously, they have toured in Washington D.C., Dallas, New York City, Philadelphia, Oklahoma City, St. Louis, New Orleans and San Antonio.
