Cheer clinic will serve up spirit

The clinic costs $40. Lunch will be provided and participants will get a T-shirt.

There’s still time to fit in one last hurrah before this year’s schoolwork gets too serious.

The Bob Jones High School cheerleaders are holding their annual cheer clinic Aug. 25 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Students in kindergarten through sixth grade are invited to attend the clinic at Bob Jones.

Laura Drury, mother of Bob Jones cheerleader and sophomore Hannah Drury, is the cheer clinic coordinator. She said cheer clinic attendees will “enjoy learning how to cheer and being a part of the Bob Jones tradition.”

The clinic costs $40. Lunch will be provided and participants will get a T-shirt. For more information, contact cheer parent Karen Reece at 256-508-9373.

Drury said, “They’ll learn some cheers. They’ll learn a little bit of tumbling passes, and there will be a little bit of stunting.”

After learning the basics, participants at the cheer clinic will put their new skills to the test. “At the end of the clinic, they’ll be able to perform for their parents. In addition to that, at one of the very first football games of the season they’ll be able to go out between quarters and do a little dance.”

Dan Harrod is the Bob Jones and Discovery Middle School cheerleading coach. Harrod cheered at Western Kentucky University and the University of Alabama.

He moved into the coach position this year after Tara Murphy, the former coach, moved to James Clemens High School to coach cheerleading. Murphy decided to leave James Clemens for the principle position at Danville Elementary School in Morgan County.

Harrod is looking forward to coaching the 28 girls on the Bob Jones team this year. “I think it will be great,” said Harrod. “It’s a rebuilding year, but we’re still strong. We’re weak in a few areas, but we make it up in a lot of other areas.”
