“We have all had educators who have made both positive and negative impressions on us,” Donaldson said. “It is my desire to make a positive impact on all of our students.”

She previously taught English courses at Bob Jones High School and sponsored the literary magazine and girls’ golf. Donaldson then worked as secondary instructional specialist and as assistant principal at Madison Elementary School.

Originally from Carrollton, Ill, she earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English language arts at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. She received administration certification and education specialist in instructional leadership at the University of North Alabama. She is writing her dissertation for a doctorate’s degree from the University of Alabama.

“All my students have made a tremendous impact on me. However, there is one who truly touched my heart,” she said. This boy, a junior excelling athletically and academically, had moved here after Hurricane Katrina. His diligence and determination impressed Donaldson.

“One day before class, I was admiring a picture of a flower that he had drawn. He gave it to me,” she said. Donaldson framed his drawing and displayed it in her classroom. The boy’s drawing now hangs in her James Clemens office “as a reminder to keep persevering despite struggles and obstacles in your path.”

When the boy was a senior, Donaldson discovered “the hidden story” while writing his letter of recommendation. She found a letter about the many struggles that he and his family faced daily. “Not once did he ever bring his frustrations or hard times to class. He came in every day ready and eager to learn and was a role model for all of his peers,” she said.

“I was filled with joy that this young man earned a college scholarship … to achieve his dreams,” Donaldson said.

She is married to Philip Donaldson, who manages Philly’s Hot Corner. Their son Luke is 19 months old. The Donaldsons are expecting another child in January.
