‘Prelude to a Kiss’ by Theatre Huntsville opens this weekend

Opening this weekend, Theatre Huntsville’s production of “Prelude to a Kiss” will feature several Madison actors.

A frequent performer in community theatre, Gaylen Pugh will portray Mrs. Boyle. David Nixon has been cast as Uncle Fred. Phil Schrimsher will play a waiter.

“The real-life husband and wife team of Chris and Ronni Bell will play Tom and Aunt Dorothy, respectively,” director Sam Marsh said. “All of these Madison residents have years of experience with several groups in the Huntsville area.”

In “Prelude to a Kiss,” an old man insists on kissing the bride at Peter and Rita’s wedding. Later, Peter realizes the woman by his side is not his wife.

“The wedding kiss caused Rita’s soul and the old man’s to change places,” Marsh said. Peter must track down the old man and free his young love’s spirit trapped in an aging and diseased body before it’s too late.

Lead actors are Shaun Buis (Peter), Erin Johnson (Rita) and Stan Evans (the old man).

Along with Marsh, the production staff includes assistant director Samantha Musto, producer Mark Moore and technical director Karl King.

“‘Prelude to a Kiss’ is a romantic comedy that appeals to all ages. Its themes are also thought-provoking,” Marsh said. “Theatre Huntsville felt it would appeal to a wide variety of audience members.”

Designing a set that accommodates the play’s fast scene changes required some creative thinking. “Technical Director Karl King, a multiple award winner for his design work in community theatre, has come up with an innovative, interesting design to meet those challenges,” Marsh said.

The show is recommended for teenagers and adults for language and adult themes.

The show opens on Jan. 11 at 7:30 in the Von Braun Playhouse and continues on Jan. 12, 17, 18 and 19 at 7:30 p.m., along with matinees at 2 p.m. on Jan. 13 and 19.

Tickets are $18 for adults and $15 for students, senior citizens and active military personnel.
