‘Slay the beast’ … registration opens for Run Through the Roses

“Find your inner beast … Eastview Beast, that is.”

That slogan is motivating runners conquer the long, uphill slope on Eastview Drive that ends the 2013 Run Through the Rose, which is on track for May 4.

Run Through The Roses is Madison’s tribute to the Kentucky Derby and the town’s signature plant, the Knockout rose. Start time for the 10k race is 7 a.m., and the race continues until 9 a.m. The 5k race time is 9 to 10 a.m., race coordinator Kristen Kulavich said.

Starting line for the 10k is Eastview Extension bridge adjacent to Bob Jones High School. The 5k starts at the Bob Jones guard station at Hughes Road. “Both races finish on Eastview Extension after topping the ‘Eastview Beast,'” Kulavich said.

Madison’s Run Through the Roses 10k and 5k routes are USAT-certified. “These races are perfect for any level runner. The courses are fun and challenging,” Kulavich said. Teams are welcome.

With registration, all runners will receive a race T-shirt. Runners in numerous age and gender brackets will earn awards. “A special vinyl window decal, given to finishers only, features the ‘Eastview Beast,'” Kulavich said.

Run Through the Roses proceeds will fund scholarships for underprivileged youth to play youth sports leagues in Madison. “Youth in need can apply for a scholarship to play soccer, football, baseball, basketball, swimming or other sport,” Kulavich said.

In addition, recreation leagues will host equipment round-ups to collect new and used equipment for youth.

Runners cannot register on race day. To register online, visit active.com. Printed registration forms are available at City Hall, Dublin Park, Eagle Rehab, Madison Wellness Center, Hogan Family YMCA and Fleet Feet. Forms can be printed from runthroughtheroses.com.

The forms also list race maps, road closures and packet pickup date and times for race day.
