MADISON — One of the most heartbreaking things dog owners have to cope with is saying “goodbye” to their beloved four legged companions.

On Wednesday, Madison Police had to say farewell to K9 service dog Gunny who passed away after succumbing to kidney failure.

Madison Police Lt. Wayne Kamus said that Gunny was a proud and valuable member of the force during his time with the department.

“During his years of service Gunny helped bring to justice multiple robbery and burglary suspects,” Kamus said. “He was instrumental in helping narcotic agents in the detection and location of illegal drugs and money.”

Kamus said that the German Shepherd was not only a vital part in the efforts in Madison, but surrounding counties as well.

“His service was not limited to that of the Madison City but also to other local agencies including Athens, Madison County and Limestone County,” Kamus said. “Gunny also often performed his abilities during school and community demonstrations.”

Gunny served with the department since 2009 and was retired for less than a month before his death. During his time of service, Officer Jason Bolden worked as his handler, trainer and partner.

Kamus said that the entire department was saddened by the passing of their K9 service dog and that his interaction with the community will not be easily replaced and that he’ll never be forgotten.

“Although Gunny was only a service dog, he was well loved by so many,” he said. “This interaction developed an admiration by our force and by our community and he will be dearly missed.”
