MADISON – Fresh produce and homemade wares will return with the Madison City Farmers Market on April 13.

The market’s 2013 season will run through November 23. Spring and summer hours are 8 a.m. to noon. The market’s address is 1282 Hughes Road.

The market “provides consumers with a choice of fresh, quality produce, food products, handcrafted items and other services … and an outlet for local farmers, producers and artisans to promote their products,” board of directors chairperson Mary Stallings said.

The first market will offer spinach, salad mix, garlic, asparagus, watercress, green onions, kale, Swiss chard, gourmet lettuces, arugula, collards, beets, broccoli and radishes. Fresh foods will include eggs, beef, pork, honey, bread, fruit pies and baked goods, including gluten-free and vegan.

For April 13, Stallings expects Blanks Berry Farm, Talley’s Fruit Farm, Spradlin Farms, Martling Mountain Farm, Eat Wright Farm, Shallow Creek Farm, Brosemer Farm, Hall & Sons Farm and 4 Maz Farms Moo-Shine Dairy.

“Local food tastes better,” Stallings said. “Better tasting food makes you more likely to want to eat your fruits and veggies.”

Crafts vendors will include Faye Whitt’s Kitchen & Garden, Dani FisseMorezzi with Sew What? cards and stationery, Jo Putney’s Designer Aprons, Laura Pope Baskets and Earth Ship Tie Dye & Fiber Arts. For tasty food, shoppers can try Mason Dixon Bakery, Beth Ratzlatt Baked Goods, Bobz Beez, Karen’s Healthy Kitchen and Front Porch Coffee.

Shoppers can visit Eddie Isbell Plants, Meredith & Abby’s Righteous Herbs, Green Pastures, Daisy Chain and Harvey’s Originals.

Gardeners can browse bedding plants for vegetables, herbs and flowers, along with potted and cut flowers. Artisans will sell soap, lotion, baskets, hand-sewn items and wood crafts.

Stallings estimates about 300 people visit the farmers’ market on a typical Saturday.

The market is accepting volunteers for tasks like setup, site breakdown, manning the information booth, coordinating music and assisting with food demonstrations.
