MADISON — A team from Bob Jones High School participated in and won third place at the Alabama Envirothon state competition April 11-13 at the Alabama 4-H Center in Columbiana.

Members of the team included Shannon Lambert, Nisha Patel, Robin Newman, David Lee and Raymond Moosavi. The students were advised by Mrs. Dale Brown and Mr. Ben Johnston, both science teachers at Bob Jones.

Envirothon is a national competition that began in 1988 in Pennsylvania and is sponsored by Legacy, Inc., RC & D Councils, Soil and Water Conservation Districts, Alabama Department of Environmental Management, NRCS and Canon, Inc.

Oak Mountain High School in Birmingham will participate in the North American Envirothon at Montana State University in Bozeman, MT  August 4-10 after wining the state competition.

“Envirothon educates students in current real-life environmental issues, incorporating concerns for soils, aquatics, wildlife, forestry and a current issue which changes annually,” Dale Brown said. “It combines in-class curriculum with hands-on field experiences which enhances a student’s critical thinking and problem solving skills and prepares them to be role models and leaders in their school and community.”

The mission of the competition is to “develop knowledgeable skilled and dedicated citizens who have an understanding of natural resources and are willing and prepared to work towards achieving and maintaining a balance between the quality of life and the quality of the environment.”

For additional information on the program contact the Soil and Water Conservation office or Betty Holley at 334-749-2612. For a complete list of statistics, visit www.envirothon.org.
