MADISON – Madison Public Library has a new assistant branch manager, Tammy Schofield.

Her passion for libraries and helping people motivated Schofield to apply. “As a Madison resident, I always enjoyed using Madison Public Library as a patron and found the staff to be knowledgeable, friendly and helpful,” she said. “The library offers many great services and activities. I wanted to be part of that.”

Schofield will work closely with branch manager Sarah Sledge and supervise overall operations and services in Sledge’s absence. “I also will function as adult services librarian by planning and overseeing adult programs and events with our new programmer, Teresa Allison,” Schofield said.

Other duties will include assisting library users and researchers, leading book groups online and in real time and selecting and ordering movies, audio books and music.

She previously worked as part-time adjunct librarian at Calhoun Community College, librarian and learning resources coordinator at Hillsborough Community College in Tampa, Fla. and instructor-cataloger at Troy University.

After attending Calhoun, she earned a bachelor’s degree in history at Troy University and a master’s degree in library science at the University of Alabama.

She served as standing committee chairperson on bibliographic quality control for the Florida College Center for Library Automation for three years.

For the future, Schofield plans to build on successful programming for adult services, increase presence on social media and add a discussion group about personal finance. “I also hope to include subject-specific book discussion groups and programs based on community interests,” she said.

Her husband Juan Luis Flores works for Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC). “My son Tony is 10 and a fifth-grader,” she said. Juan Luis’ job at Redstone Arsenal brought the family to Madison five years ago.

“My family and I love Madison and all the educational, technology and sports opportunities for children and families,” Schofield said. In spare time, she enjoys walking her dogs Coco and Penney, swimming and “of course … reading.”
