James Clemens baseball to present ‘An Evening with Sid Bream’

MADISON – The James Clemens High School baseball program will present “An Evening with Sid Bream” on Oct. 17 in the auditorium.

“Our James Clemens Booster Club was thinking of new ways to raise money other than trying to sell things door to door or other typical venues that teams use,” Jets head baseball coach Shane Medlen said. “One of our parents, Donnie Borst, had seen Sid Bream speak at an event and ran down the contacts needed for this to happen.”

After registration starting at 5:30, the event will open at 6:30 p.m. Bream serves as spokesperson for Christian Sports International, and a Fellowship of Christian Athletes member will be opening speaker.

A silent auction will offer autographed memorabilia from Bream and an Alabama print from local artist Doug Hess, among other merchandise. Fifty guests can attend an autograph session with Bream at 8:30 p.m. for $50.

Advance tickets are $15 or $20 on event day. For kindergartners through college students, tickets are $10.

During his career, Bream played for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Pittsburgh Pirates and Houston Astros. “When he was with the Atlanta Braves, he played first base,” Medlen said. “Most people will remember him for scoring the game-winning run in the 1992 National League Championship Series (NLCS) that sent the Braves to the World Series.”

Medlen sees the event as “an opportunity for Braves fans to see one of the greats. Anyone who just likes baseball in general will enjoy ‘An Evening with Sid Bream.'”

The James Clemens boosters are offering a limited number of sponsorships. “Once these are sold, we won’t have any others to offer,” Medlen said.

Medlen hopes this event becomes an annual fundraiser featuring different speakers. “Not only can we raise money for the baseball program but we can also let people see our great school and build some community pride in our new high school,” he said.
