Tamas improves Madison Dog Park for Eagle Scout project
MADISON – Dobermans, dachshunds and Dalmatians will be pleased that Jack Tamas has improved Madison Dog Park while pursuing his Eagle Scout rank.

After Cub Scouts, Tamas crossed over to Boy Scouts in fifth grade and has enjoyed camping, acquiring merit badges and assuming leadership positions. “I learned what it would take to be an Eagle Scout and knew that was a goal I wanted to achieve,” he said. Currently, he’s a Life Scout.
Deciding on a project, Tamas first talked with Gayle Milam, Madison’s special event coordinator. Milam mentioned the dog park. “I thought it would not only be a fun project but something most families would benefit from,” Tamas said.
Milam suggested signage, so Tamas designed signs shaped like dogs and a garden shaped like a dog bone. “Now when people drive by, the sign area is much more noticeable,” Tamas said.
In addition, Tamas researched dog agility equipment and “came up with high jumps and a tire tunnel. Both were low cost and easy to put in place.” He also repaired, sanded and stained two picnic tables.

For the project, Tamas defined the scope of work, determined amount and cost of supplies and secured the materials, along with recruiting, scheduling and training volunteers. He worked alongside volunteers and gave feedback.
In a military family, Tamas has lived in Virginia three different times, Japan, New Jersey and Colorado, until moving to Alabama in 2011. He is a freshman at Pope John Paul II Catholic High School and participates in football, Culture Club and Campus Ministry.
Jack’s parents are Bob and Donna Tamas. His father works for Modern Technology Solutions Inc. His brother Ryan also is an Eagle Scout.
Helping him with the project were fellow Scouts in Troop 350 with Troop Leader Kevin Peterson, JPII classmates, Adam and Kathryn Koons, Allison Helmbrecht and Ryan Tamas.
The Tamas family attends St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.
“This Scout went above and beyond what was required,” Milam said. “It was an honor to work with Jack.”
