Second in a series — Fifth-, sixth-graders capture wins at Math Mania

MADISON – Like their peers in other grades, Madison fifth- and sixth-graders collected several titles at Rocket City Junior Math Mania competition.

With Grissom High School teams as host, Math Mania was held at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center on Nov. 16. This year, 740 students in grades 4-8 entered the annual contest from across Alabama.

In addition, younger students were allowed to compete in the fourth-grade division.

All students take individual tests. The top fifteen in each grade then receive individual awards. For fifth grade, 145 individuals competed, divided into 42 groups and representing 23 schools.

Among the competing fifth-graders, Duke Yeom from Heritage Elementary School won first place.

Other individual winners were James Yoo, Mill Creek Elementary School, fifth; Sujay Jakka, West Madison Elementary School, seventh; Josh Lin, Madison Elementary School, ninth; Sahil Gaba, Columbia Elementary School, twelfth; Devika Shankar, Columbia, thirteenth; and Isaac Wang, Columbia, fifteenth.

Columbia’s fifth-grade group won second place with Sarah Cooley, Sahil Gaba, Devika Shankar and Isaac Wang. In third place were Jackson Eames, Josh Lin, Aidan Sims and Chris Woodard from Madison elementary. Rainbow’s team with Nolan Drummond, Jimmy Sieja and Emma Tolbert took fourth.

Math Mania had 169 sixth-graders from 22 schools. The sixth-graders were divided into 51 groups.

Sixth-grade individual awards went to Victoria Lee, Rainbow, second place; Neil Chaudhary, Heritage, third; and from Columbia, Rohan Sethi in fourth, Lawrence Zhang in ninth, Shreyas Pant in tenth and Anshul Moondra in fourteenth.

Columbia’s sixth-grade team won first place with Sumedha Bobba, Anshul Moondra, Shreyas Pant and Lawrence Zhang. Heritage’s team with Neil Chaudhary, Vishay Ram, Max Steiner and Steve Yoon earned fourth place.
