on City Schools has added an award to the school district’s array.

Katrina Bowling, who works as the district’s technology coordinator, received the Chiquita Marbury Technology Innovation Award. Bowling accepted her award at the Alabama Educational Technology Conference in Birmingham.

The Alabama State Department of Education presents the Marbury award to individuals who are recognized as exemplary innovators in technology.

“I’m extremely proud of Ms. Bowling and our entire technology team,” Madison City Schools Superintendent Dr. Dee Fowler said. Fowler, Bowling and other technology staff members attended the Birmingham conference on June 4.

“We all know that technology is vital to our daily operations. It would be easy to simply focus on keeping systems operational. Our technology department, under Ms. Bowling’s guidance, is very forward thinking,” Fowler said.

The Madison technology staff is “always searching for new and innovative ways to incorporate technology into the learning environment,” he said.

Criteria for the Chiquita Marbury Technology Innovation Award include creativity, impact on teaching and learning, leadership, teamwork and scholarship. The state department gives the awards annually in honor of Chiquita Marbury.

Marbury was a passionate visionary in technology integration. She devoted years of service in expanding technological advances into the classroom and in transforming learning one child at a time.

Each year, the state department presents one award in these categories: elementary, middle and high school teachers, school administrator, district technology coordinator and superintendent or another central office staff member.

Bowling and other award recipients took to the dais with Alabama State Superintendent of Education Dr. Tommy Bice to accept their honors. The award ceremony was held at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex in Birmingham.
