HUNTSVILLE – Sabrina Swistek, a student at Pope John Paul II Catholic High School, has been named STAR 99.1 FM’s Community Awareness for Youth (CAFY) Young Citizen for June.

The CAFY program spotlights students for outstanding community service and the positive impact they have in the community.

For about three years, Swistek has volunteered at Peace, Love and Animals shelter in Tanner and helps care for 30 dogs. She helps families with adoption events and recently organized a supply drive to collect items for day-to-day animal care.

A regular blood donor for American Red Cross, she has volunteered for seven years.

“Sabrina is an amazing student and volunteer. Her compassion and talent truly makes a difference in our community. We are delighted she received this award,” JPII Principal Vince Aquila said.

Swistek maintains a 4.5 grade point average and has been accepted to the early admissions program for veterinary medicine at Mississippi State University. She is a member of JPII’s Science Olympiad Team, National Honor Society, Green Team, Culture Club and Campus Ministry.

In other honors, she has earned the Student Appreciation Award from Optimist Club of Huntsville. Swistek has received awards from the National Latin Honor Society and was named student of the year in chemistry and Latin II.

After winning in local, regional and state science fairs, she received the State Science Fair’s Special Recognition Award from the American Association of University Women.

To present the CAFY Young Citizen honor, Star 99.1 FM partners with Huntsville and Madison County schools, DynCorp International and the police department, office of multicultural affairs and Human Relations Commission in Huntsville.

JPII Catholic High School’s address is 7301 Old Madison Pike. For more information, visit jp2falcons.org.
