MADISON -When little Johnnie and Sally leave for the first day of school on Aug. 5, parents need to confirm that their clothing complies with the dress code for Madison City Schools.

The “Code of Student Conduct” also defines policies used for buses, threatening behavior, events and prohibited substances and devices. The document is available at madisoncity.k12.al.us.

Immodest clothing that would cause distractions with students is a major consideration. “The (Madison Board of Education) believes that good grooming, dress and personal appearance are essential elements in the learning process because they contribute to a more favorable learning attitude and environment,” the document states.

All students must wear appropriate length for shorts and skirts. Skirt and shorts’ bottoms can’t be more than four inches above the knee. Spaghetti straps are not allowed.

A student’s hair must be clean, sanitary, not impair vision and not “colored … to cause a distraction/disruption,” the policy states. Clothing cannot include pictures, writings or symbols that promote drugs, tobacco, alcohol, sexual activities or gangs.

Overcoats, trench coats, bulky and oversized jackets are prohibited in the classroom. Students cannot wear off-the-shoulder or tank tops, halters, see-through items or clothing with holes above the knees.

“Clothing, trousers or shorts, which are excessively baggy and … worn to expose underwear or body above or below the waist, and drag on the floor will not be permitted,” the policy states.

Students cannot wear hats, caps and other head coverings in the school building. Sunglasses and bandanas are banned in the classroom and bus.

Students in grades 9-12 have additional considerations. They cannot wear athletic shorts, sweat pants and track or wind suits.

High school students must remove any jewelry or ornamental devices in body piercing. “As a safety requirement and to avoid the risk of injury or infection, neither other students nor school personnel shall be allowed to assist in removal of ornamental devices appended by piercing or clamping,” the policy states.

A principal can suspend any student, for the remainder of the school day, violating the dress code.
