MADISON – Halftime was game time for the senior members of the James Clemens homecoming court in its special game against the Sparkman Senators. After a shortened halftime performance by Sparkman’s matching band, the elegantly dressed girls strode down the 50-yard line as their names were called from the press box.

After the procession of Jet senior representatives cascaded down the field, the announcement came and Lauren Harksen was crowned as the third James Clemens homecoming queen.

Principal Brian Clayton placed the crown on Harksen’s head as tears of joy welled from her eyes. Harksen’s escort, Keoni Parks, was also recognized as homecoming king.

“I’m surprised, but it feels awesome,” Harksen said. “I’m really excited.”

The presentation was a culmination of weeks of planning and meticulous execution of homecoming week, parade and ceremony. Harksen did her part in the planning phase as well, taking part in the homecoming committee this year.

A senior, Harksen participates in many school activities, such as Student Government Association and National Honor Society. She is also heavily considering an in-state university to continue her education.

“After I graduate, I’m looking at Troy right now and I’m on the verge of becoming a broadcaster, so hopefully something like that,” Harksen said.

On the field, James Clemens was able to outscore Sparkman 14-3 after making halftime adjustments.

The Jets’ homecoming parade, which took place the evening before the game, featured floats reflecting different ways the freshman, sophomore, junior and senior classes used collected materials to donate to charities.

The freshmen collected water bottles to “soak the Senators,” the sophomores opted to “roll over the Senators” with donated toilet paper, the juniors “canned the Senators” by donating canned goods and the seniors accumulated shoes and socks to “stomp the Senators.”
