MADISON – The last Madison City Council meeting of the year yielded a crucial step for a restaurant poised to open in January on Highway 72 and a first reading of proposed changes to the City Cemetery regulations.

Taziki’s Mediterranean Café, which is set to open in the new year, was granted a beer and wine license from the City. Taziki’s will be next to Dunkin’ Donuts on Brookridge Drive on Highway 72 between Balch Road and Wall-Triana Highway.

The proposed changes to the City Cemetery regulations essentially will shift duties related to the burial of persons to private companies. While scheduling and arranging for burials still lie with the City, authorized contractors are now able to open and close graves in City Cemeteries.

“I think we’ve got something that can work a little more clearly [in the proposed changes],” City Attorney Kelly Butler said.

In other news, the Madison Beautification – Tree Board was awarded its $10,000 annual appropriation, and the Madison Dolphins Swim Team donated $500 to be deposited into the Recreation Donation account.

The Dolphins Swim Team competes in a summer swim league through the Parks and Recreation Department. Several swimmers with the Bob Jones boys varsity swim team, which just won the state title Dec. 13, swim as Dolphins.
