HUNTSVILLE – Broadway Theatre League will present the hilarious Broadway smash, “Sister Act,” at the Von Braun Center for five performances on Jan. 9-11.

Whoopi Goldberg, who starred in the hit film version, is producer of “Sister Act,” along with Troika Entertainment and Sister Act on Tour LLC. “Sister Act” received five 2011 Tony Award nominations, including “Best Musical,” “Best Original Score” and “Best Book of a Musical.”

Show times will be Jan. 9 at 8 p.m., Jan. 10 at 2 and 8 p.m. and Jan. 11 at 2 and 7:30 p.m. in the Mark C. Smith Concert Hall.

“‘Sister Act’ is a family-friendly musical, suitable for 10-year-olds and older,” league membership director Barry Sublett said. “The only violence occurs at the beginning when the main character witnesses her boyfriend commit murder.”

The show revolves around Deloris Van Cartier, a washed-up Las Vegas singer who sees her mobster boyfriend shoot a rival. To escape the mob, Deloris agrees to a ‘witness protection’ setup in the most unlikely location — a convent.

Disguised as a nun, Deloris assumes the moniker of “Sister Mary Clarence.” Much to the Mother Superior’s disdain, Sister Mary Clarence inspires the nun’s lackluster choir to improve not only its choral programs but their church’s outreach.

“The musical has great original tunes by songwriter Alan Menken and lyricist Glenn Slater that skitters from Motown, to soul and funk, to disco and even a little Barry White,” Mark Kennedy with “The Associated Press” said.

Tickets are $17 for students (17 years old and younger) and $27 for adults. For tickets, call Broadway Theatre League at 256-518-6155 or visit their VBC office at 700 Monroe St., Suite 410, or contact Ticketmaster at 800-745-3000 or ticketmaster.com.

Jerry Damson Automotive Group is season sponsor. WAAY-TV is show sponsor.
