Madison City Community Orchestra to present spring concert on May 3

MADISON – A new musical organization, Madison City Community Orchestra (MCCO) will present its inaugural Spring Concert on May 3.
The concert will be held at Madison United Methodist Church, 127 Church St., in the Christian Life Center at 6 p.m.
“We have a great lineup for this concert with excerpts from musicals by Hugo, Gershwin, Bernstein, Shaw and others,” director Sandy Weisner said. MCCO will performs songs from “Les Miserables,” “Phantom of the Opera,” “Fiddler on the Roof,” “The Nutcracker,” “My Fair Lady,” “West Side Story,” “Harry’s Wondrous World” and “An American in Paris.”
This concert is free. Also on May 3, MCCO’s chamber group will accompany Madison UMC Choir for Mark Hayes’ “Requiem” at 8:30 and 10:45 a.m. worship services.
In 2010, MCCO began as a small 10-member orchestra at Madison UMC. To recruit players for a concert, Weisner visited Frank Cotton at Madison Band Supply. Cotton “asked me why I didn’t just make my group the city group,” she said.
Interested in the idea, Weisner later consulted Cotton. “He had the name ‘Madison City Community Orchestra’ and said he would give it to me,” Weisner said. Weisner met with Mayor Troy Trulock, who “gave his full support.”
“We briefly talked about the eventual plan to build a Madison Arts Center, similar to the Von Braun Center but on a smaller scale. Hopefully, we can gain funding needed in the next five years or so,” Weisner said.
Madison’s growth can accommodate MCCO, Madison City Youth Orchestra and Madison Community Band, Weisner said, without competition among the groups.
“I’m very pleased with progress we’re making and current membership,” Weisner said. She welcomes new players, especially strings and percussionists.
MCCO rehearses on Mondays from 6:30 to 8 p.m., August through May, at Madison UMC.
High school juniors and older with 3-4 years of experience can join MCCO. MCCO will hold open auditions in late summer. No membership fee is charged.
