MADISON – Wanted: Bus drivers for Madison students.

Madison City Schools is facing an immediate for bus drivers and bus aides. The Madison district is not the only school system facing this shortage, according to public relations manager John Peck.

“Every day, our bus drivers go the extra mile, so to speak, to ensure the safe delivery of students in Madison City Schools,” Peck said. “The drivers do this for field trips, athletic events and other school functions as well.”

Coincidentally, the call for applicants corresponds with School Bus Safety Week running Oct. 19-23. “Madison City Schools proudly salutes its drivers, mechanics, route managers and all the others who support this service,” Peck said.

Last year, Madison City Schools logged 792,350 miles transporting about 5,000 students daily to schools. Bus transportation remains as a safe means to transport children to schools, Peck said.

The job of bus driver is a part-time position “that pays well,” Peck said. “What kind of folks drive us? Retired engineers, butchers, hairdressers, stay-at-home moms and dads, Realtors and pastors — just to name a few.”

The school system will provide training for the CDL (Commercial Drivers’ License) test and state certification. Applicants must have a valid driver’s license with a good driving record.

After working in this job, drivers can work themselves toward expanded hours that could include benefits, Peck said. Other positions also are available in the MCS Transportation Department.

Bobby Jackson leads the department as transportation specialist. Transportation headquarters’ address is 217 Westchester Road in Madison.

For information about applying, call transportation office manager Debbie Leeth at 256-774-4613 or email to dgleeth@madisoncity.k12.al.us.
