Veteran of the Week

MADISON – Lieutenant Colonel Steve Noe retired from the U.S. Army after 21 years as an Ordnance Corps officer.

Currently at Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), Noe is a program manager for unmanned aerial system training and simulation programs on Redstone Arsenal. Previously at SAIC, he worked as Deputy Program Manager for Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) sustainment program in Kuwait.

In 1983, he enlisted in Iowa Army National Guard and completed basic training at Fort Leonardwood, Mo. and advanced individual training at Fort Jackson, S.C. He served in National Guard until graduation from the University of Northern Iowa in 1988 and came to Redstone Arsenal for his Ammunition Officer Basic Course.

Noe’s assignments included Explosive Ordnance Disposal commander, maintenance company commander, logistics officer and Army acquisition programs, like Crusader Field Artillery System and Stryker Infantry Combat Vehicle projects.

He was deployed in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan in 2004-2005 and Operation Joint Guard/Endeavor in Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1998.

The Noes were stationed at Sierra Army Depot, Calif.; Schofield Barracks, Hawaii; Picatinny Arsenal, N.J. and Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md. His last assignment was Product Manager for Unmanned Ground Vehicles, which brought the family to Madison in 2005.

At his retirement, the family remained in Madison because son Justin and daughter Jennifer were enrolled at Bob Jones High School. “Madison was the right choice because the small community atmosphere made us feel like we were back home in Iowa and everything our family needed was right here,” Noe said.

Madison offered “some of the best schools for our kids, a great community to live and work and access to all kinds of outdoor recreation and community activities,” Noe said.

Noe earned a master’s degree from Webster University. He is a member of Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International and Program Management Institute. He and his wife Lorie attend Asbury United Methodist Church.

When not spending time with family and his seven-month-old grandson Cayden, Steve enjoys fishing and deer and turkey hunting.
