Hairdressing is perfect career for Alfred

MADISON – Because no two days are alike, hairdressing is a perfect career for Marty Alfred.

After living in the Madison area for 24 years, she opened her first business, Boulevard Hair Studio, in 2014. “A dream come true,” Marty said.

“I’ve been a hairdresser for 27 years and feel truly blessed to still enjoy my work,” Marty said. “I love meeting new people (and) seeing loyal patrons who’ve been with me 20-plus years.”

Standing up to 10 hours daily is the downside, but “the good far outweighs the bad.”

Born in Mobile, she grew up in Toney and Pulaski, Tenn. After Giles County High School, she earned a bachelor’s degree from Alabama A&M University. “I’ve always lived in the South,” she said.

Madison is a family-oriented town, she said. “Family events are always packed to full capacity because people are very supportive of their children. This explains why Madison has some of the best schools and test scores in the country.”

Many older couples relocate here to live near their children and grandchildren, she said. “People fall in love with the Southern hospitality. There’s also a plethora of wonderful churches.”

Husband Kory is Parks and Recreation Director for the City of Madison. “On top of maintaining about 480 acres of parks, trails and greenways, he also oversees Madison Senior Center and the MARS program,” she said.

“Kory has lived in seven cities and claims that Madison is the best community,” Marty said. Her daughter Brittani lives in Los Angeles.

The Alfreds have one cat and three dogs: Brutus, 115-pound bull mastiff; Kramer, 11-month-old Banter Bulldogge; and Ozzie, eight-year-old cockapoo. They frequently visit Mill Creek Dog Park.

Marty’s taste in music has changed from Bon Jovi in her ‘salad days’ to Darius Rucker or Mercy Me nowadays.

“I must admit … Kory and I eat out way too often. My favorite place is Another Broken Egg. My favorite dinner place is Picasso’s,” Marty said.

“I’m one of the few women that enjoys fishing,” she said. Attending baseball and hockey games is another pastime, along with golfing.
