MADISON – After 18 years on Hughes Road, Tonya Cates Bergman has moved her hair salon, The Big Tease, downtown to 14 Short St.

“I was ready to start focusing on my family and clients instead of a large overhead,” Bergman said. “I was ready for something smaller and intimate.”

“I’ve done ‘the big salon thing,’ and it’s time for a new chapter. It’s time to slow down, reduce stress and enjoy my grandbabies,” she said.

Moving downtown, Bergman “loves the idea of being a part of the revitalization to Madison Station. We have been a part of the Madison community a long time. Sometimes, I feel a little historic (ha).”

“There’s going to be lots of changes downtown. I can’t wait,” she said.

A hairdresser for 22 years, Bergman loves her work. “My passion is color. I stay up-to date-on all color trends and techniques,” she said. She also enjoys teaching and has successfully apprenticed three stylists.

A family salon, The Big Tease was named for Bergman’s “love of big teased hair. I have learned to tame that over the years.” Bergman, her daughter and another stylist are working at the Short Street location.

The Big Tease offers haircuts, color, specialty color (Ombre, balayage and dimensional color), perms, ‘special event’ hair, waxing and ‘on-location’ styles for weddings and parties.

“We pride ourselves on customer satisfaction. We want everyone to love their hair and realize they are number 1,” Bergman said. “I feel blessed because I catch up with my closest friends and get paid for it.”

Currently, a color and cut is priced at $35. The Big Tease uses Redken color and sells Redken and Pureology.

A Huntsville native, Tonya is married to Chris Bergman. Her children are Jamie, 28, Heather, 26, and Corey, 24. Tonya’s grandchildren are Gage, 6, Lila, 3, and Able, six months.

Salon hours are Tuesday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturdays 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. or later by appointment. Walk-ins are accepted.
