MADISON – Madison City Chess League will sponsor two girls in North Alabama to attend MidSouth Summer Chess Camp.

The weeklong, overnight chess camp in Memphis has an early registration deadline on March 31. Early bird tuition is $395. Residential camp fee is $395.

For scholarship eligibility, the applicant must be female and have a minimum rating of 700 from U.S. Chess Federation, commitment to improving chess skills and good sportsmanship. The girl also must show potential for future success in competitive chess and hold membership in a school chess club or Madison City Chess League.

The girl must have “willingness to attend MidSouth Summer Chess Camp and also attend one Girls Chess Night in Madison in the summer to share her summer camp experience with other girls,” chess league executive director Ranae Bartlett said.

“If you are awarded a scholarship, Madison City Chess League will pay up to $500 to MidSouth Chess that can be applied to your tuition and residential fee,” Bartlett said. “Some of our top chess players in Madison have attended Mid-South Summer Chess Camp in the past.”

“If you are not planning to use the residential accommodations provided by MidSouth, the league will pay your tuition of $395 directly to MidSouth Chess,” Bartlett said. “Currently, two scholarships are available to girls living in North Alabama.”

Deadline to apply for a scholarship is March 25. To apply online, visit madisonchess.com, click “Events,” click “Upcoming Events” and click “Mid-South Summer Chess Camp.”

Tennessee Valley Chapter of Women in Defense made a donation to the league’s Girls Chess Initiative to provide the scholarships. “Madison City Chess League wants to support and encourage girls to study chess by providing scholarships like this one,” Bartlett said. “If you would like to support the Girls Chess Initiative, you can learn more at madisonchess.com/blog/donate-to-mccl-today.”
