MADISON – Army Veteran Dan Shanahan has announced his candidacy to represent District 5 with Madison City Council.

Shanahan served 30 years in the Army. In his last two years on active duty, he served as Chief of Staff with U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command on Redstone Arsenal. He currently works as a senior manager with The Boeing Company.

“I have always had a strong sense of service and community,” Shanahan said. “Our family tries to give back to the community where possible. Running for City Council is important to me and is important to the residents of Madison.”

He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and has master’s degrees in public administration and in strategy. Shanahan said his education, career experiences and commitment to excellence will serve him well in the campaign and while serving on City Council.

“I will work for economic development, safe neighborhoods, improved infrastructure, continued support for Madison’s outstanding schools and will work hard together, while building strong relationships with state, county and surrounding area city officials,” Shanahan said.

Dan and wife Mindy and sons Patrick and Kevin moved to Madison in 2010. Dan Shanahan attended flight training at Fort Rucker near Dothan. He and Mindy lived briefly in Ozark after he attended Aviation Career Course.

Shanahan served in combat in Iraq in 2003, 2006 and 2007. He led an Aviation Brigade from the 1st Cavalry Division of Fort Hood, Texas.

Shanahan said he believes in teamwork and representing residents of District 5. He formerly served as president of Highland Lake’s Home Owners Association. “I plan to work closely with Madison’s mayor and other City Council members to plan and execute a strong vision for Madison’s future,” he said.

“Madison’s election is Aug. 23. Those who vote at St John the Baptist Catholic School are in District 5,” he said.

Tommy Overcash currently serves as District 5 Councilman.
