MADISON – This summer, Morgan Thomas will represent her school, James Clemens High, at a statewide conference.

Thomas will be a delegate to Girls State in Tuscaloosa, sponsored by American Legion Auxiliary (ALA).

For one week, delegates will take part in the political life of their self-governing community, primarily through campaigning for and electing mock city, county and state offices. Delegates also will learn the operation of government by participating in party caucuses.

Through the election process, the teenagers increase their effectiveness as potential future state leaders. Well-known speakers and other state, county and city officials are expected to visit and enlighten the young women on their civic responsibilities.

Thomas was selected to attend American Legion Auxiliary Girls State because of her outstanding leadership and civic involvement in her high school and local community. She is actively involved with the Madison Belles ambassador program; the Belles serve as official city representatives at festivals, parades and municipal ceremonies.

Her other commitments include support for Madison Station Historical Preservation Society, assistance to candidates in local political elections and participating as a member of Society of Physics Students. She has excelled in mathematics by joining math teams at her schools and entering regional tournaments.

Morgan’s parents are Teddy and Rikki Powell of Madison and Wes Thomas of Huntsville.

Beginning in 1937, Girls State programs have been held in each state in the United States. Sponsored for high school juniors, Alabama Girls State is a laboratory of practical government and a personal application of duties, responsibilities and privileges of being an American.
