MADISON – Local author and former dentist Dr. Hilda Lee will give a presentation about her book, “In the Labyrinth of Binge Eating,” at Madison Public Library on June 14.

Lee’s session and book signing is slated for 7 p.m., adult services librarian Anne Wood said.

Lee conquered her problem with binge eating and openly discusses the problem. She secretly ate huge amounts of food, at times defenseless at stopping until falling into deep sleep. Her behavior left her filled with shame and self-loathing, she said.

Diet plans and weight-loss books did not help her overcame binge eating. Lee thought she “needed to find the right diet and exert stronger will-power. Tragically, each diet led deeper into the darkness and shame of binge eating.”

The following excerpt shows the captivating tone of Lee’s book: “The heavy thud of Dad’s bare feet on the linoleum floor awakens me. I sit up in bed. My heartbeat quickens and my chest tightens. I stare through the dark at the dim outline of the closed door that separates my bedroom from the kitchen—and from him.”

Lee considers North Alabama and western North Carolina as her home. She attended the University of Alabama in Huntsville, earned a bachelor’s degree in literature and completed post-graduate work in the sciences. She then attended dental school and received her Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree.

After practicing dentistry for many years, she decided that she would change her life’s direction. Lee sold her dental practice and enrolled in graduate school at the University of North Carolina in Asheville. She received a master’s degree in liberal arts.

Then, Lee wrote her first full-length book, “In the Labyrinth of Binge Eating.” She was selected as a national finalist in Sequestrum’s 2015 New Writers Award.

She and husband Glenn have been married more than 50 years. They have two children and eight grandchildren.

“In the Labyrinth of Binge Eating” is available on Amazon for $12.95. For more information, visit hildadulinlee.com.
