MADISON COUNTY – With the beginning of the school year quickly approaching, many children are in need of basic school supplies. This year, the Salvation Army is partnering with a handful of Madison County schools that do not receive materials from any collection drives.

“We believe that the schools will be best able to distribute these donations to the children with the greatest need. Please consider joining us as we help these schools equip their children to succeed,” community relations coordinator Pamela Donald said.

“Cost of school supplies can be overwhelming to some families,” Donald said. The Salvation Army, with your help, is happy to assist with meeting these needs.”

Drop-off locations for family stores are 386 Hughes Road in Madison and 2112 Oakwood Ave. in Huntsville, along with the Salvation Army office at 2114 Oakwood Ave. in Huntsville.

Donald hopes residents will donate the classroom items as soon as possible because classes begin the first week of August. Students return to the classroom in Madison on Aug. 3.

Any residents that want to volunteer with sorting donations can meet on July 29 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Salvation Army office, 2114 Oakwood Avenue. “Thank you for joining us as we support and pray for the students of our community,” Donald said.

More expensive needs for the classroom are scientific calculators (Texas Instruments or ACT), 2-GB flash drives, packages of three tennis balls and new white T-shirts.

Students need all types of paper, including writing paper, second-grade Zaner-Bloser; first-grade handwriting paper; construction and copy paper in white and colors; and card stock in white and colors.

For writing and drawing, they need yellow #2 pencils, Ticonderoga pencils, mechanical pencils, colored pencils, black sharpies, along with pencil sharpeners, cap and large rubber erasers and clear pencil boxes.

A book bag and school box are indispensable for a student today. They also use three-holed, zippered pencil bags that fit in binders, art supply storage/boxes, rulers in centimeter and inch measurements and scissors.

For health and cleaning concerns, every classroom needs paper towels, liquid anti-bacterial soap, liquid hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes and spray, all-purpose cleaning spray, baby wipes and facial tissue.
